I think I have to agree that the man took his life for the loss of a dear family member. Perhaps causing a loss in faith. And yes he may have been a preacher or someone very devout.

But the story overall is about what happens after we die. All the other people on the lifts were dead too. Also the fence had stated different times on the posts. Maybe stating that time is cyclic or overlapping (or both). The elevator may depict the passage into the next heaven or hell.

But the fact that at the end the "UP" appears may indicate God's forgiveness. He doesn't allow people to choose. Everyone would choose "UP". Perhaps God takes those that commit suicide and asks if they are sorry. Perhaps they were in a poor state of mind for whatever reason.

Don't listen to those douche bags that say this sux...hey assholes it takes real talent to do acapella. And the additional people singing are recreating the sounds and effects that come from synthesizing, reverb and all those cool tricks they do to songs into studios.
